FOX News – U.S. military forces sent helicopters into Somalia in a nighttime raid Tuesday and freed two hostages, an American and a Dane, while killing nine kidnappers, U.S. officials confirm. American Jessica Buchanan, 32, and Dane Poul Hagan Thisted, 60, had been working with a de-mining unit of the Danish Refugee Council when they were kidnapped in October.

The raid was conducted by a joint team overseen by Africa Command involving Special Operations forces, including Navy SEAL Team Six, the same unit — though not the exact same individuals — that killed Al Qaeda leader Usama bin Laden in May, a senior U.S. military source told Fox News.

….A U.S. official told Fox News that the rescue team dropped into the area from parachutes off fixed-wing aircraft and from their drop point ran to the encampment. The official said the captors were killed and the hostages secured everyone and left via helicopter. The captors were heavily armed and had explosives on them, Little said. There were no known survivors among the kidnappers. No Americans were injured during the raid, he said.

Great news ey. Glad to hear they killed all the scumbags and got back safely with the hostages. When will hollywood get round to making a movie on SEAL Team Six. After Black Hawk Down, the world needs to see westerners kicking savages ass on their home soil. Which is what happens almost all the time anyway.

We got back just before the new year and I meant to get back into the blogosphere, but boy-oh-boy did the jet lag kick to the groin. Damn, it wasn’t so bad when we went off to Africa, but coming back was far worse. Night after night of waking in the middle of the night angling for food. We’re over it now thankfully.

The flight back home was quicker than going there, we had a stiff tail wind and it was a night flight, so we slept about half the way. More importantly as you all with little ones will know, the little one slept most of the way. I got to finish watching the new Planet of the Apes movie, I saw the first half on the trip going away. I didn’t like that Caesar monkey folks, he got a mean streak in him, but I digress.

Our trip was nice, spent time with family and good friends, the little one had a ball of a time, she’s very wary of other adults, but she really likes other children. Her face would light up every time she saw a child, even total strangers. I’m really happy that she enjoyed it, so glad we didn’t have to deal with a whiny, sulking toddler all the time. She was just whiny when we were alone.

Another nice change was that she started sleeping next to us and on our shoulders, she never used to do that, she always insisted on being alone in her room and I felt like we were losing out. Mind you, now she won’t sleep on her own. Yeah, yeah I know…. careful what you wish for, you might just get it.

I went on safari whilst in Africa, didn’t see many interesting animals though, mainly buck like impalas. Didn’t see any of the big cats, well I saw plenty on NatGeo Wild and Animal Planet and there was the one night I was driving somewhere when I saw a stray cat crossing the road.

It’s good to be back home folks, my own bed, even if the elbow room is a little less in the new year.

Fox News – Military officials at Camp Pendleton are investigating a cross that was erected by a group of former Marines to honor their fallen colleagues, after an atheist group objected to the monument. …..The Los Angeles Times documented the former Marines as they carried the 13-foot cross up a steep hill – a Veterans Day journey that took two hours. They were accompanied by the widows and children of the fallen Marines.

The cross was erected and dedicated to the memory of Maj. Douglas Zembiec, Maj. Ray Mendoza, Lance Cpl. Aaron Austin and Lance Cpl. Robert Zurheide. It replaced another cross that was destroyed by a brush fire in 2003. The former Marines chose to carry the cross, rather than use a vehicle. They told the newspaper that carrying the cross was an act of profound symbolism: the fallen are never forgotten, the mission never falters.

But for Jason Torpy, president of the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers [appears more like an association of irritating assholes to me], the cross is a violation of the constitutional separation of church and state.
